As a teacher, nothing brings greater pride than when former students return to our school and offer their wisdom and knowledge. This was the case on May 18. Former Lyme Student and recent graduate of U Mass Amherst's graduate program in Social Justice, Eric Barthold, came to speak to our seventh grade boys about the "mask of masculinity" and how boys are socialized to be "men" by presenting as tough, strong, and emotionless. Eric discussed the false stereotypes of what it means to be a man and the importance of breaking down these barriers.
Our school's health education curriculum includes the social and emotional well being of individuals. We are grateful for Eric's time and commitment to this meaningful work and to changing societal norms of how boys "should" be.
