Quilting has an important historical significance in New England history, especially in Lyme. As part of their year long investigation of the rich tapestry of our town's past, the 4th Grade had a glimpse and tried their hand at the art of quilting. The students explored the many traditional patterns of quilting's past, as well as hearing about the many fascinating stories a quilt can tell. With the guidance of Mrs. Wilcox, as master quilter, students had the opportunity to see samples of her historical collection of quilts (some dating to the late 1800's). Mr. Dayno also shared his collection of student made quilts passed down to him from the "good old days". After creating their own unique and colorful patterns on paper, the 4th Graders threaded their own needles and gave it a try. Quilting Circles sprang up and each student became engaged in their 6 x 6 quilt square. The room was filled with the sound of needles stitching through fabric, with the occasional "ouch" being heard. Hopefully this brief introduction to the art of quilting will provide the 4th Grade with a comforting connection and warm memories for many years to come... A special Thank You to Mrs. Wilcox for all her help and patience!
