The Lyme School first grade has begun exploring how they can use writing as a tool for communicating, teaching and sharing their expertise with others. Throughout this non fiction writing unit the first graders will explore mentor texts and identify ways these authors teach others through their writing. Our goal is to discover and put into practice a variety of ways we can best teach others through our writing.
We are in the early stages of this form of writing and we have already found major differences between story books and teaching books. We noticed differences in these areas: content, author’s voice, real vs drawn pictures and author’s purpose.
Our class is bursting at the seams with knowledge that they want to teach others through their writing. We have started learning the process that non fiction authors work through when preparing and writing their pieces. We discovered that planning ahead and getting a sketch down for each thing we want to teach is an important step in creating an organized teaching piece.
Students have started to plan, sketch and write their first teaching pieces. Our class is full of teachers and experts who look forward to sharing their vast knowledge through writing!
