Kate (Grade 8)
This is a landscape that pretty closely replicates a painting by Grant Haffner (which was, afterall the assignment), but with a clear Kate-like diversion into “I am going to make this exactly the way that I want.”. Kate can mix an infinite range of colors, is thoughtful with her edges (where the colors and shapes meet), and has a great sense of texture and space. This one has been an absolute joy to see unfold.
Chris (Grade 5)
Chris is a painter! He often speaks about the artists in his family that inspire him and will ask to paint at the first opportunity. He finds these little windows of time…”Ms.G, can I paint? I need skin color.” He is determined to make this painting come into being. Could I hang it up? Nope. It went right home.
Grade 2
My friend is always eager to try new things… he is an enthusiastic explorer of Art! Here he is sharing his room sculpture, complete with fish tank and lamp, wallpaper and flooring. The students had been learning how to draw simple 3D houses, creating imaginary villages. For this lesson, we looked at how artists represent houses (dotty Lichtenstein to swirly Van Gogh) and folded and cut a square to make a 3D room. I love the ways in which my friend found ways to fill out the spaces of this idea (“what if I taped more rooms together?”).
