The 7th grade was introduced to the 1960’s, as they prepared to read The Outsiders. We discussed identity and the students made their own identity chart. Students paired up and without knowing what others wrote, they gave their partner four words they thought their partners used to describe them. As we began reading The Outsiders, groups made identity charts for the characters. The 7th graders developed the understanding of how being a part of a group can influence our identity.
