Using the timeless classic The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton as our anchor text, we are embarking on a unit that centers around the theme of identity. The students have created identity charts for themselves and we have read short stories and analyzed poems looking at how we see ourselves and how others might view us. Last week we created identity charts for each of the main characters in The Outsiders and discussed ways in which each of the characters is an outsider in a different way. Through the text we have had the opportunity to discuss some cultural differences between the 1960s and today, listened to a little 1960s music and (shockingly!) shared the many experiences these students have had at drive-in movies.
Our writing this week will be centered around drafting, editing and finalizing our first book reviews of the year. The hope is that students will spread the word about the most recent book that they have read and loved, so that classmates can enjoy them as well. The completed book reviews will be displayed in the classroom so that 6th, 7th and 8th graders that come in and out of Ms. Collins' room can all benefit from these recommendations. Teachers, too!
