The First Grade had the opportunity to learn about skulls and animal teeth through the Four Winds Nature program.
They began by exploring their own teeth through eating different textured foods, carrots, dried apple, popcorn, etc. They were tasked with identifying which of their teeth they were using most to eat certain foods.
After learning about their own teeth they applied that knowledge to animals and engaged with illustrations, skulls and examples of various teeth types and purposes.
They learned about the different teeth found in omnivore, carnivore and herbivore skulls and identified the uses for each of the types.
To wrap up their lesson they were challenged to create their own animal skull. Students needed to choose whether it was an omnivore, carnivore or herbivore. They had to identify and create the right kind of teeth that their animal would need for survival.
The students had such a wonderful time engaging with this learning opportunity.
We are so appreciative of our Four Winds Volunteers and the engaging, authentic and intriguing learning opportunities they bring into our classroom.
