During the month of February, students in the primary grades (K-2) celebrated "Healthy Heart Month" where they learned about using their heart, muscles, and lungs (cardiovascular endurance) as a team to help keep their bodies healthy. We also spoke about setting goals, particularly in the second grade. We talked about goals being manageable and how they need work to accomplish them. Some of the goal that students worked on included: learning to jump rope better, jumping backwards, jumping a certain number of times in a row, and jumping for a certain amount of minutes. Students worked hard and have a lot to be proud of!
While the primary students were involved in jump roping, the intermediate grades (grades 3-5) were busy participating in our own PE version of the Olympic winter games. Each students was placed in a group that then become a country. Each country competed in modified activities, which included: cross country skiing (on carpet squares), the biathlon (using carpet squares and rolling balls to knock down a pin as a target), and bob sledding (being pushed on a scooter). The focus was not on winning medals, but instead working as a team/country, giving best effort in something new, being gracious no matter what place in each country placed, and just having some fun, all of which was included in our own Olympic oath. A gold medal was certainly accomplished there!
