The 8th students ended their school year painting tessellations on our classroom ceiling tiles. Their goal was to design a translating or rotating tessellation that when completed, would leave no gaps or overlaps. This project has become a tradition of sorts, so the students had a variety of examples on the ceiling to inspire them. Yet each group (and a few brave solo participants) came up with unique and gorgeous ideas.
The process involved an introduction to tessellations; practice creating a translating and rotating shape; a collaborative effort to come up with the final design (many iterations); cutting out stencils and deciding on the intricate details; tracing their stencil on a ceiling tile; and painting their vision.
